For quite some time now Nikon fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the D800. Every scrap of news or gossip is splashed all across the internet in desperate attempts to find out when Nikon will release this much anticipated DSLR camera. For some the wait is just wetting their appetite but has Nikon's notorious secrecy on the D800 gone too far?Early 2011 brought news that there might be a big release in February. After all this is when Nikon has previously made their big announcements. They hype built up, everyone was holding out for what is said to be the new market leader in its class. Unfortunately, Nikon decided to release the CliQ instead, devastating fans world wide and possibly loosing more than a few along the way. "It's become a joke" says one online blogger. Speculation that the delay's were due to the earthquakes in Japan began spreading which is understandable, but Nikon has still yet to confirm this.Is it going to be worth it in the end? Many hard core fans believe it will as the Nikon and Canon battle continues. The Nikon D800 is rumored to be released in direct competition to the Canon 5D Mark III. And with the unconfirmed news that it will boast a huge 36 mega-pixel sensor, there's no doubt it will. It is said to also shoot video in 1080p HD at 30 frames per second and feature a significantly larger LCD. This is of course all the features of the professional, not the casual hobby enthusiast with the price tag expected to reach the $4,000 US mark.Lately there have been reports that a promotional video has been shot in Chicago, causing half the city centre to close. Lots of high speed photography with motorbikes and cars in low light. There are also reports that Nikon has purchased significant amounts of advertising in high end photography magazines for early 2012 suggesting something might be on the horizon. But talks are also spreading that the D800 might again be pushed to the back of the line as the Nikon D4 is taking the stage in it's place. So, to all the Nikon-nuts out there, don't hold your breath. Nikon has a reputation for stalling to increase hype of a product (using the marketing techniques of Apple perhaps?) but has it gone too far? Only time will tell. If you simply can't wait and still need to get your hands on a quality DSLR or upgrade, Nikon's D700 is definitely going to hold you over!
